10 Best Low-Carb Festive Starters

Rachel Lett

Chief Care Officer

So far we've discussed the best canapés and drinks for the festive season. Now it's time to kick off the festive feast with a starter.

Starters should be lip smacking and appetising in anticipation of what's to come, and be light enough so that you're not stuffed.

Here are our top ten low carb appetisers that are bright and uplifting.

1. Game Terrine

Get ahead of the game with this easy and elegant terrine. This can be made in advance and feeds a crowd — great for up and coming festive dinner parties.

2. Wood Pigeon Salad

This salad relies on good ingredients. The sharp, mustardy vinaigrette cuts through the rich and nutty taste of the wood pigeon, bacon and walnuts. Don't be fooled by the simplicity of this salad — each morsel is complex and refined.

3. Fennel, Prosciutto & Rocket Salad

Fresh, crunchy fennel with soft, salty prosciutto and a peppery hit from rocket. This is Italy on a plate. Enjoy on its own or as a great addition to antipasti.

4. Endive, Bacon and Creamy Herb Dressing

Salty, crunchy, creamy and fresh, a perfect appetiser.

5. Crack Kale Caesar Salad

Highly addictive, kale salad —a sure way to get your greens in! This salad doesn’t spoil if prepared in advance (it actually gets better), so perfect for dinner parties.

6. Thyme Chicken Liver Pate

Gram for gram, liver has more nutrients than any other food, so well worth incorporating into your diet. It’s one of those foods, you either love it, or you hate it, but make it into a pate, and it’s a totally different food —people love it!

7. Warming Ginger, Walnut & Chicken Liver Salad

This salad is capable of converting liver loathers, give it a go!

8. Baked Camembert

Silky, creamy, oozy baked camembert. No need for bread, just dig in with a spoon!

9. Marinated Mackerel

This is exactly what a starter should be — bright, uplifting and appetising. The zingy vinegar cuts through the oily mackerel, making it light and fresh.

10. Smoked Salmon and Cucumber Mousse

This smoked salmon mousse is creamy, airy and subtle. Neither cucumber, nor smoked salmon take over — they carry each other in harmony.
